WFSB is a Meredith Broadcast Group property and the CBS affiliate in the Hartford-New Haven market. We recently added six AG-HPX370 P2 HD shoulder-mount camcorders to our roster of Panasonic solid-state camcorders for ENG. As part of our ongoing transition to a tapeless newsgathering operation, we initially began shooting news with Panasonic AG-HPX500 P2 HD camcorders, and in 2009 added eight AG-HPX300 P2 HD models (the predecessor to the HPX370). With our most recent investment, we're able to equip each of our 16 news photographers with their own camcorder, laptop and hard drive.
WFSB, a CBS affiliate in the Hartford-New Haven market, needed to transition its video capabilities to a high-quality, HD, and most importantly, tapeless newsgathering operation.
To make the transition as seamless as possible, the station chose a package of six Panasonic HPX370 P2 HD shoulder-mount camcorders, fully equipped with newly-developed 1/3-inch full-HD 2.2 megapixel ULT (Ultra Luminance Technology) 3-MOS imagers, and a 20-bit digital signal processor capable of acquiring native 1920x1080 resolution images.
With a combination of the HPX370s and HPX300s (for ENG applications), WFSB has fully migrated to Panasonic P2-based newsgathering, and havs been able to expand the station’s recording capacity while simultaneously reducing cost.
WFSB is the market leader in local news and is highly regarded for its coverage of breaking stories statewide, producing more than 30 hours of local news weekly. We find hat the HPX370 is the ideal ENG camera for our operation. This is especially so since their P2 card storage offers expanded capacity and reduced cost. The two-slot HPX370 represents an affordable way to continue our migration to P2-based newsgathering with a full-size broadcast package. The camera shoots a really nice picture and is really solid.
It's attractively priced and our operators have found that it's also comfortable to use. MANY NICE FEATURES The HPX370 is a second-generation, interchangeable-lens camcorder with 10-bit, 4:2:2, independent-frame full 1920x1080 resolution AVC-Intra recording. The unit incorporates newly-developed 1/3-inch full-HD 2.2 megapixel ULT (Ultra Luminance Technology) 3-MOS imagers, and a 20-bit digital signal processor to acquire native 1920x1080 resolution images.
The Panasonic camcorder also affords us the flexibility of interchangeable lenses, when we need it. The camcorder's interfaces include two SDI outputs (switchable between HD/SD-SDI output), and we've been using this connectivity in tandem for tests with Live Vu, which allows us to send live feeds to the station from the field. Overall, we consider P2 media the most resilient camcorder in the industry, and know that we can count on reliable performance thanks to the P2's non-moving parts reliability.
We've especially seen how dependable P2 can be during this past winter season, with the new camcorders performing flawlessly in blizzard conditions. With the combination of the HPX370s and HPX300s for our ENG applications, we know we have some of the very best broadcast gear on the streets, which we feel is commensurate with our standing as the market leader.
